Txoko # 42: Window views

Askotan aipatzen dot etxe honetan gela ezberdinetatik dagozan bistak. A room with a view, eta gehiago esango neuke, gela bakoitza bere bistagaz. Etxe honetan gela guztiek daukielako bista bat, eta etxearen lau ataletara emoten dabe. Hau goiko komunetik ikusten dana dana: errota zaharra. Gaur egun hor gordetzen ditugu egurrak.

Beneath this window there is a courtyard. The room underneath is the kitchen with a door that opens to it. It's convenient to pick up wood for the fire and an easy access to the hanging line. It's practical, easy to move around, and you don't need gravel or absurd sculptures on it to make it pleasant. It´s a place full of life on it's own right.

Y cómo no recurrir a Christopher Alexander, es una tentación constante. Siempre tiene alguna observación perspicaz sobre cualquiera de las cuestiones que se plantean ante las disyuntivas del diseño. Yo como él, creo en el diseño orgánico, creado en base a la función, al uso diario, a la necesidad. Lo útil por encima de la estética.


Conflict:

The courtyards built in modern buildings are very often dead. They are intended to be private open spaces for people to use- but they end up unused, full of gravel and abstract sculptures.

Resolution:
Place every courtyard in such a way that there is a view out of it to some larger open space; place it so that at least two or three doors open from the building into it and so that natural paths which connect these doors pass across the courtyard. And, at one edge, beside a door, make a roofed veranda or a porch, which is continuous with both the inside and the courtyard.
